John Monash Science School
Below details the creative process and design decisions that informed the branding and identity system for the John Monash Science School.
The John Monash Science School (JMSS) is a 20 million dollar initiative by the Victorian Government to provide innovative education focussed on Science, Mathematics and associated technologies. The vision for JMSS is to be a nationally and internationally recognised centre for excellence in innovation research-based teaching and learning.
In collaboration with the Victorian Government, Porter Novelli and the JMSS steering committee, Qualia Creative developed the corporate identity system and promotional collateral for the institution.
At the commencement of the design, JMSS was just a vacant car park on the grounds of Monash University. So to provide personality to this institution, which was yet to exist, was the initial challenge embraced.
The below shows some of the initial Mood Boards that were developed to encourage discussion and ideation amongst the committee:

Through a series of concept presentations and subsequent refinement, a marque was produced that communicated the idea of networks as a lateral, multi-layered entity. The interconnecting lines form a globe to reference the internationally focussed curriculum, while also suggesting that students may walk their own path and not be confined to a ridged form of pedagogy.
Typographically, the serif typeface Requiem was used to provide an authoritarian counter-point by suggesting tradition, stability and security. This was supported by the san-serif face Gotham to extend the elements of typographic style.
