Research & Education
Design is a dynamic and continually changing discipline.
Continued research and education is a strong focus with the practitioners at Qualia, as these pursuits hone skills and nurture the most important tool in the designer's arsenal - passion.

Education
Drawing on his years of experience as a successful graphic designer, David Gill lectures in RMIT University's Graphic Design Post Graduate Program in typography and identity design. David believes that the act of teaching the finer elements of your craft creates a symbiont relationship between the teacher and the student where knowledge is exchanged and theories challenged.
Dave Smith also regularly reviews and accesses theses from Master of Design students.
Academic Papers
In 2004 Dave Smith completed a Masters of Graphic Design by research. The findings of this study help formulate his thesis, Creative Processes In Image Making which explored the various aspects and methodologies of creativity.
Similarly, David Gill completed a thesis on Intuition & Creativity as part of his honours degree. While this paper also dealt with the creative process, David focussed on how intuition and lateral thinking assists in the process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.
Exerts of each will shortly be published on this website.
Studio Initiatives
To compliment our commercial practice, Qualia Creative also focuses on studio-initiated, research-based projects ranging from exhibitions to editorial contributions.
Our last major initiative was in the form of a screen printing exhibition called Helbourne – An Exploded Exhibition Of Text And Image.
Helbourne was a narrative driven exhibition set within the McCulloch Gallery, select bars and cafes of Melbourne's CBD and was told through site-specific, screen-printed artworks and short stories.
